New 17-storey student accommodation bloc planned for Cardiff city centre

If you live or work in Cardiff, you’ll know that the Welsh capital is renowned for its student population; students currently make up around 20% of the entire population, and with this figure continuing to rise, it means more student accommodation is required to meet demand. The issue of student accommodation in Cardiff is a little contentious at the moment, with many residents voicing concerns that the new buildings are eyesores on Cardiff’s skyline, while others believe empty properties and land should be sold off to build community halls, or affordable housing for those in need, instead of student accommodation. It appears that while concerns are noted, student accommodation blocs will continue to appear over the coming years. Plans have just been revealed for a 17-storey student accommodation bloc at Bradley Court and the adjoining 11 Park Place. The old Bradley Court and 11 Park Place used to be the location of law firm Blake Morgan, but the location has remained empty since the company moved out.
Vita Student submitted plans for the student accommodation bloc earlier in the year, and the views of the public were sought, with the responses gathered highlighting a few issues. Vita Student removed a storey of accommodation and reduced the width of the development as per the findings, but on the whole, the original proposals are more or less the same.
What can students expect from the new student accommodation bloc?
The new student accommodation block will include 366 student studio apartments, along with space for a gym, games room, movie room, private dining room, and study areas. What’s more, the revised plans show that the bloc will house its own restaurant and bar on the ground floor, called the Laundrette, which will cater to both students and the public.
Vita Student also revealed that as part of the planning application, the company will make a financial contribution to the improvement of the Cardiff Dock Feeder located next to the New Theatre.
A spokesperson for Vita Student said that the company is very excited to bring the Vita brand to Cardiff, and wants the development to bring with it wider benefits to the local community. The spokesperson added that the company is grateful for the feedback from residents during the consultation period, and that the planned proposals will now be submitted to Cardiff Council for their consideration and approval.
