University applications on the up despite coronavirus uncertainty, but situation remains fragile, says UCAS chief.
New figures published by UCAS, the UK university admissions service, show that an additional 6,500 UK 18-year-olds have applied to start degree courses for the 2020-2021 academic year compared to the year previous.
The news comes amid fears that many would defer their studies by a year due to health fears or a considerable change in the ‘student experience’; what with many universities having to implement distanced learning and local pubs, clubs and restaurants operating differently.
The number of EU applicants is down by 2% compared to last year, whilst applicants from outside the EU are up by 10%.
UCAS go on to confirm that the overall number of applicants, of all ages from all domiciles, stands at the highest figure in four years.
However, there is a word of caution. Prospective students who have applied can request to defer at any point during the application process because there is no set deadline, so if a second wave of the pandemic hits or more local lockdowns come into place, then the number of enrolments may not match the current number of applicants.
