Cardiff Bay attracts £6 million creative industries centre

The final designs for a £6 million creative industries centre in Cardiff Bay have been approved. They will form part of the Porth Teigr development, which is home to the BBC Wales Drama Village, home of Doctor Who, Casualty and Pobol y Cwm, among others.

The 40,000sqft centre will be built to BREEAM Excellent standards, having been designed by Ash Sakula Architects to incorporate environmentally friendly features. The six-storey building will have room for up to 300 staff, and could accommodate a number of small to medium businesses or a single large occupier. Together with the BBC Wales Roath Lock studio, it will form a media hub at the heart of Cardiff Bay, attracting media activity, business and professionals to the city.

Assembly Business Minister Edwina Hart said she was pleased with the development. “Wales has a strong and diverse creative industries sector which has been identified as one of our strategically important economic sectors with high growth potential,” she said. “I am pleased the Welsh Government is supporting this latest development which has the potential to act as a catalyst to create a strong sector cluster in Porth Teigr.”

Construction will begin at the end of the year, and the centre is due to open in June 2014. The Welsh Government will take a 25 year head lease on the centre. As well as the studios, Porth Teigr is home to BBC Worldwide’s popular Doctor Who Experience, as well as the World of Boats attraction.
