Save on energy bills with these kitchen hacks!

We're all about being eco-friendly in the CPS Homes office and with everyone feeling the pinch of high energy bills right now, we've come up with some useful tips to help you keep those costs down.

By building better habits when it comes to your cooking methods and looking after appliances in this room you can do your bit to look after the environment whilst freeing up some extra cash too. These little savings will all add up and can make a big difference to your budget!

When you pop the kettle on, make sure you only fill it up with as much water you’re going to need for that boil. The more water you boil, the more energy you use. You could potentially save around £22 a year this way. To save water, don't forget to turn taps off when they don't need to be used.

When your fridge is full, it needs to work harder to keep everything cool, so uses up a lot more energy. Keep checking dates and smelling food to make sure it's not packed with gone-off products that are needlessly using up energy. Another thing to be mindful of is to try not to open and close the door too much, as warm air being let in and out means the work has to work hard to keep cooling the air down again.

Zap your energy bills by cooking dinner in a microwave rather than an oven if its possible. Experts agree that microwaves are ideal for cost cutting as they only heat the food, not the air around it. E.g. if you cook a jacket potato in the microwave, it uses 25% less energy than if you were to use the oven.

If you're cooking for the week and need to use the oven, why not make the most of that leftover space? Pop some extra bits in to make full use of it, reducing the amount of times you need to turn the oven on. Whatever you cook can be eaten over the next few days or frozen for later use (this will also come in super handy during those busy study periods where you don't have time to constantly rustle up new recipes and spend all evening in the kitchen!).

Making sure to scrub your hob regularly has more benefits than you might think! If you leave your hobs with burnt-on food and grease, not only will they not work as well as possible and will take longer to cook food, they also use up more energy, with the heat having to push through all of that grime first.
