Top tips for the aspiring homebuyer

Sian Hiatt, Sales ManagerSian Hiatt, Sales Manager, provides a few tips that can help make the homebuying process be as enjoyable and exciting as possible...

The process of buying a home can seem confusing, stressful and fairly overwhelming a lot of the time. It’s likely to be the biggest purchase you make in your lifetime, so there are plenty of very important decisions that go into it.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to make the whole homebuying ordeal - from purchase through to spending the first weeks and months in your new pad - as stress-free as possible.

Below, you’ll find a few tips that homebuyers can use to successfully get their foot on the property ladder and make a house a home.

Research the area

The location of the property can make a huge difference to more than just the price. It can make or break your entire experience living in that home, so get the lowdown on all the important details by researching the area, speaking to locals and checking it all out for yourself. Journeys to local schools, shortcuts to supermarkets, distance to the nearest doctor or dentist, the number of local pubs - whatever may be important to you, find out about it! Visit at different times of the day to better understand how busy the roads can get and test out transport links. Only commit to an area if it ticks your important boxes.

Save, save, save

It’s no secret that buying a home is a huge financial outlay and something that many of us have to manage for much of our lives in the form of mortgage repayments. The larger the deposit the better, but you have to factor in more than just the initial deposit. There will be other financial considerations such as mortgage arrangement fees, solicitor fees, council tax, utility bills, insurance and home removal costs among others. Tightening the purse strings for a while by cutting down on non-essential expenditure will help you save, save, save. Holding back on simple things such as buying new clothes, having expensive meals out, or buying large coffees every morning can soon help the savings add up over a period of time.

Garner your interior design ideas

One of the most wonderful things about buying your own home is being able to decorate it exactly as you want it. Homebuyers have often considered colour schemes and furniture arrangements long before the moving date arrives, so enjoy that time by creating online mood boards and browsing interior design websites for inspiration and to learn about the latest trends and ideas from experts. You’ll then have a much clearer idea of what you’re looking for when it comes to homeware shopping.

Enjoy moving in day

You’ve scouted the location, researched the area, saved up as much as possible and jotted down all of your home interior design ideas - once the work with the estate agent and solicitor is complete, all that’s left to do is to move in and enjoy your new home. The transport of heavy boxes and endless unpacking may seem like a slog, but this is really a time of celebration! Make sure you enjoy it and embrace the hard work that you’ve put in to have this new house that you can now call your home.
