The best parks to live near in Cardiff

Photo of Cardiff Castle and Bute ParkIf there’s one thing Cardiff offers in abundance over many other large UK cities, it’s parks and green spaces! Located in the heart of South Wales, our wonderful Welsh capital is just a short drive from some incredible mountainous scenery in one direction, and sprawling coastline and beaches in another. Not to mention other cities can be reached in under an hour for an alternative day out with Swansea to the west, and Bristol to the east.

However, Cardiff itself offers a huge variety of parks and outdoor spaces right here in the city centre and surrounding suburbs, so if you’re looking for a property in Cardiff that’s close to a park or field, you’re quite spoilt for choice.

Let’s dive right in and take a look at some of the most popular parks to live near in Cardiff.

Roath Park

If there’s one park that needs no introduction to local Cardiffians, it’s surely Roath Park. First opened in 1894, it was one of the very first public parks that residents could enjoy, with a classic Victorian feel and a huge lake that’s home to many swans, ducks, and other wildlife. Plus, the iconic lighthouse is always worthy of an Instagram snap.

The park and lake itself is lined with some beautiful and mightily impressive homes, but being nestled among a collection of Cardiff suburbs, including Roath, Cyncoed, Penylan, and Cathays, to name just a few, you can easily get away with loosely classing Roath Park as “on your doorstep” from pretty much anywhere across these areas.

Bute Park

One of the fantastic plus points to Cardiff City Centre is it’s access to so much green space thanks to the connecting Bute Park. To have Cardiff Castle proudly stood at the heart of the city wasn’t enough - we needed a huge, stunning green park with river walks and café’s to stop for a bite to eat all located directly behind it!

Being able to live in the city centre and only have a short stroll to so much outdoor space is something many people surely take for granted in Cardiff, but if you’re looking for a home near the city centre, you’re sure to appreciate it upon your arrival. It’s great fun to explore through every season, including any winter snow we get!

Parc Cefn Onn

To the north of the city, those living in the Cardiff suburbs of Lisvane and Thornhill can enjoy direct access to Parc Cefn Onn, a grade 2 listed country park. This park also offers access to a footpath network that connects to Caerphilly Mountain, so you can easily turn a visit to this park into a full day out.

There are streams, ponds, woodlands, and a whole haven of wildlife, making it a truly beautiful spot for families, couples, retirees, and everyone who enjoys some tranquil outdoor space from time to time!

Victoria Park

There will be many people of a certain generation who hold plenty of fond memories of Victoria Park. Located in the area of Canton, it’s the perfect place to take children on a hot summers day thanks to it’s wet outdoor play area with water fountains. One little known fact is that Victoria Park was one of the first UK parks to receive a restoration grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 1995, which highlights how important this park is to the local community as well as to those who visit from all across Cardiff.

Heath Park

The “green lung” of Cardiff’s northern suburbs, Heath Park is an important green space with many facilities. Most easily accessed from residents in Heath as well as some areas of Whitchurch, the park still attracts visitors from all over due to its well-used sports fields and changing rooms, children’s playground, refreshments, woodland areas, wildlife ponds, sensory garden, and much more.

These are just a very small selection of parks and outdoor spaces available in Cardiff - the city offers so much more with fantastic options for homebuyers and renters alike in every suburb.
