Best areas to live in Cardiff for retirement

Llandaff

The quaint suburb of Llandaff is perfect for those who enjoy historical surroundings within a glorious village setting. Home to the iconic Llandaff cathedral and interesting medieval remains, as well as a wonderful variety of independent cafes, restaurants, pubs and boutique stalls - all of which inject plenty of character into the area. There are also many pleasant walks within easy reach thanks to the Taff Trail running through the local Llandaff fields. What's more, Llandaff is the birthplace of Roald Dahl - the family had splendid taste!

Cyncoed

One of the priciest areas of Cardiff but also one of the most sought-after, is Cyncoed. It's not just the beautifully built homes and quiet surroundings that make this area such an attractive proposition, but also the nearby attractions and other neighbouring areas. Many of the most expensive homes in Cyncoed offer a view of Roath Lake and the famous lighthouse, while many others are just a short stroll away. The large green fields of Roath Park is of course situated next door to the lake, while the small yet delightful village of Penylan is also within easy reach.

Penylan

As briefly mentioned above, Penylan is a desirable little village that's nestled among the likes of Cyncoed and Roath. Despite the larger and more well known suburbs that surround Penylan, it has still managed to retain a real sense of identity with local residents being proud of its charming village atmosphere and peaceful leafy avenues - despite the city hustle and bustle being just a few short miles away and all within view thanks to Penylans' elevated position. The village of Penylan is also known for the Waterloo Gardens, which is home to the much-loved Waterloo Teahouse and a row of shops, including a local hair salon and post office.

Penarth

For sea-lovers, Penarth, which is a town that's located right next to Cardiff and well linked with many transport options, is the perfect choice. So much so, it was known as “The Garden by the Sea” during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. In the town centre you'll find a huge array of independent shops, restaurants, bars, various social activities and a tight-knit community. A short distance away from the town centre is the stunning Penarth seafront with Penarth pier as the focal point - perfect for an early morning or afternoon stroll when the weather is calm. There's also Penarth Marina to enjoy, or you could take a short trip over a link bridge into Cardiff Bay. On the other side of Penarth you have easy access to the likes of Barry Island and Cosmeston Lakes.
