After almost a decade, Cardiff Council has approved blueprints that will see eight areas in Cardiff go through a development overhaul, introducing approximately 14,000 new homes, jobs and public services. These plans are in addition to the transformation of the area outside Cardiff Central rail station, and are sure to breathe a new lease of life into the Welsh capital.

1. City Centre

It is undeniable that Cardiff Council is focusing heavily on revitalising Cardiff city centre, and this will be furthered with the introduction of an enterprise zone consisting of offices and a transport interchange.

Cardiff Council aims to increase its standing with businesses by making improvements to Callaghan Square to cement its position as “Wales’ premier business location”.

Of course, it’s not just businesses who will benefit from these new development plans, the council plans on introducing improved bus routes, better access for pedestrians and cyclists as well as a cycle hub.

There will also be a new primary school built.

2. Ferry Road – site of the former gasworks

The former gasworks site will see the building of up to 500 new homes, with a stipulation that the developer must also contribute to facilities that can be used by the community, including a community facility, schools and a play area.

There is also the potential that the methane at Grangemoor Park could be used for a heat and power system.

3. North West Cardiff

North West Cardiff will be home to a minimum of 5,000 new homes and jobs, which should assuage any fears that Cardiff’s expansion will lead to overpopulation without an increase in employment possibilities.

Travel will be getting a big boost in this area with new bus routes planned along with improved rail links to RCT, Radyr, Danescourt and Llandaff rail stations.

Once more, there will also be a focus on community services with the creation of new shops, a GP surgery, and up to four new primary schools. There will also be an upgrade to Fairwater leisure centre.

4. & 5. North of Junction 33 and south of Creigiau

The area north of junction 33 will see 2,000 new properties built, while 650 will be constructed south of Creigiau village. The development plans also include shops, a library, two primary schools, a playground and allotments, with Creigiau facility also seeing improvements.

There will also be work done to improve Llantristant Road/Cardiff Road junction, as well as the creation of new bus routes and a park and ride.

6. Between Pontprennau and Lisvane

The area between Pontprennau and Lisvane will have a minimum of 4,500 new homes and jobs created, including jobs at St Mellons Business Park. To service these new homes, there will be a new secondary school built along with three new primary schools.

Travel improvements will also be made and will include bus routes to the east of Pontcanna, and a link to the rail service at Llanishen and Thornhill rail stations.

7. East of Pontprennau link road

A minimum of 1,300 new houses will be built east of Pontprennau along with a GP surgery and a new primary school, and an area for allotments.

There will also be new bus corridors and a rail interchange created, and an improvement to the subway at St Edeyrn’s Church.

8. South of St Mellons Business Park

The most exciting news about the developments in the area south of St Mellons Business Park is the construction of a new rail station that will link the city centre, Cardiff airport, and London via Cardiff Central.

There will be also a park & ride service and a high-quality office development. What’s more, vital work will be done to ensure new flood mitigation procedures are put in place.

At CPS Homes, we are extremely excited to see how these developments pan out, and we look forward to seeing how the developments change the Cardiff landscape.
